We have water in the bottom of our engine compartment. I don't think we had this in the past. We checked the thru hull but this is not the problem Any suggestions about why and/or how to correct? Thank you.

Check your raw water pump and seals. If it is leaking you can replace the seals or the entire pump.

Thanks Stu. I'll check the pump and seals. After I posted, my husband went to the boat and told me that he found some oil in the water. If you have any thoughts, please share. Thanks! Peg

Most likely your raw water pump is leaking and spraying water on the engine. The oil could be coming from the outside of the engine if you have spilled some in the past or a drop or two has dripped off the dipstick.

The only thing he can do is run it and see where the water is coming from. Most likely the water pump. Mine was leaking from the water pump, mixing elbow nipple and the engine drain petcock. Engine bilges are oily anyway.

When looking for leaks put paper towles down in the engine compartment, it helps identify where the leaks are comming from.

Another thought would be the exhaust hose. Since the engine draws water from the raw water pump and exhausts it out through this hose, a small leak could be there too. I just had to replace my exhaust hose as it had split and was pumping water into the engine compartment, and eventually into the bilge.

That almost assures that the seals are the culprit. There are two seals in pumps: one keeps the water out and the other keeps the oil in.

Here's what they look like on what is most likely a different pump than yours, but should give you the idea:

Thanks Stu! We're hauling out in two weeks and will take a good look into the seals and replacement process.
