Water in engine compartment of Passage 42

I recently purchased a 1997 Passage 42, pristine condition. While working on it this weekend, I noticed a lot of water under the engine. I know where it came from (stuffing box, which was just repacked). Question is: Where is the water supposed to go to? I could not find any place for it to get to the bilge...no pumps, drains, nothing. I pumped it out with a dinghy bailer, was about 3 gallons. I know Hunter wouldn't make a mistake like this, but do any of you have an idea how this water is supposed to get to the bilge?

Oil

They made it that way so any oil that leaks from the engine stays out of the bilge. I will look tonight but I thought there was a couple holes back by the stuffing box that lets it drain to the bilge.

Ours Drains Out

We have a 1997 P42 also. Our stuffing box water does make it to the bilge. [we replaced it with drippless last year.] The area immediately below the engine does not drain to bilge because it is a oil catch, but I can't see how stuffing box water to make it to that area. On ours, the stiffing box water would travel under the oil catch to the bilge. Are you sure the water came from the stuffing box?

Brad-good question

I just put the boat in the water, so I am ASSUMING it is the stuffing box, through hulls are not leaking. It's hard to tell other possibilities, since there was over 3 gals of water in it. Will look again this weekend. The stuffing box drip appears to run downhill into this area, there is a slight lip between the stuffing box and this area. I will dig around some more. I don't think the other owner ever checked this out. Thanks, very helpful answer! Bruce

Bill Sheehey-thanks!

Appreciate you looking tonight, needless to say, I am curious, and concerned. If you should pick up this message, would you mind e-mailing me with what you find out? Thanks very much bruce.hill@infores.com

check the strainers

Like the other replies, water from the stuffing box on my 97 goes through a couple of holes under the oil catch basin. Water from either of the two strainers might make it to that area however. Check to be sure they are not leeking. I replaced the o0rings on both of mine.

"Draining"

Had the same problem, but then discovered the solution. Hunter put in two drill holes at the corners of the dam between the area below the Packing nut and below the engine. Feel along the dam for the two holes. The one closest to the engine acess door drains to the bilege the other drains via a pocket in the dam to the bilege. Take a wire hanger and unplug the holes from whatever junk accumulated there.. and watch the wate drain.
