Water in bilge

I recently purchased a Hunter 27, 1980 year. I have been attempting to understand where various routes of water come from that run into the bilge. My questions are: 1) I have determined that the icebox drains directly into the bilge and the bilge pump takes care of that. 2) Where does the water go that is put into the sink in the head area? 3) And most importantly, where does the water go that enters the cockpit hatches? I am not taking on any water in the cockpit hatch areas but I would like to clean out the two storage areas and wasn't sure if the water would drain into the bilge or if it would be retained in a different area. I realize this might be an elementary question, but bear with me....I am learning. Thanks.

Water!

1) I have determined that the icebox drains directly into the bilge and the bilge pump takes care of that. Yes - but if you use the blue ice packs you wont have that problem, or you can plug the drain and remove the water using other methods. A bilge pump wont get all the water out of the bilge since the 27 has a shallow bilge. When you have the boat on a good heel, water can get in the settees. 2) Where does the water go that is put into the sink in the head area? The sink in the head should drain out the port side of the boat, about a foot and a half or so above the boot strip, just below the sink. There is no valve. When the boat is heeled over on that side you will hear a gurgling sound coming from the sink. The galley sink drains directly below the sink (below the water line) through a through hull. There should be a seacock there. 3) And most importantly, where does the water go that enters the cockpit hatches? I am not taking on any water in the cockpit hatch areas but I would like to clean out the two storage areas and wasn't sure if the water would drain into the bilge or if it would be retained in a different area. The hatches in the cockpit are design with channels. For the most part the water will drain onto the cockpit floor and should be channeled back to the scuppers to drain out near the rudder. Sometimes water may get inside the hatches, but it is very minimal. When it does, it will make it's way to the bilge. If you clean out the storage areas be very careful, since the water is directed through and under the engine compartment, there may be residual oils or diesel that will make it's way to the bilge. You don't want to pump that overboard. Hope this helps, Manny

I'll give it a try.

Yes, you are correct water in the cooler drains into the bilge. Water on the small sink by the head goes out a trough the hull above the water line. If you were to use a hose in the cockpit lazarette some of the water would probably pool there and the rest get into the space between the hull and the sole liner. Use a some Clorox so at least you can kill some of the organisms that thrive in those spaces. You can drain and dry the bilge and within 30 minutes it will be full again as some of that water will drain into the bilge. There are many gallons down there. The biggest culprits for water in the bilge are usually the drip on the packing gland, rain leaks, leaking stanchions, leaking water tank and plumbing, leaking through the hull valves, head seals and leaking engine cooling hoses.
