Water in Bilge vs. Pan?

Hi, I have a 1981 Hunter 27 and have discovered that my bilge pump sits in some kind of a pan or liner and there is actually several inches of water underneath it that is only accessible through a small hole. I am comtemplating cutting a hole in the pan to drop the pump down onto the top of the keel (keelbolts) itself, but I wondered what other folks might have done to deal with this water. I end up with several inches of water in the starboard locker, which is dry at the mooring, but wet after a sail. I presume it comes from under there somehow. Thanks, Dan

Thanks for the Thoughts

Thanks for the replies. I have the same Rule pump, and actually bought a different model with the float switch because I wasn't getting the bilge dry enough. I haven't installed it yet because I was thinking I needed to cut a hole and drop it down into the "bilge". I will re-consider staying with the current pump per your suggestion. I will also look at the hose and where it goes through into the starboard locker. I have a wet port locker and can sponge it out and it will stay dry sitting on the mooring, but be wet after sailing. I think the knotmeter seeps, but I replaced all the gate valves with new seacocks this spring and nothing else obvious leaks. This all made me wonder about the space under the "pans". I was over today winterizing and pumped most of a gallon out from under through the holes in the stringers/ribs that the sole sits on. It might be one of those things that I will just always have to keep an eye on. (And a working pump connected to a good battery) I love the boat, but it's certainly a little more than the old Catalina 22. :) Dan
