Water heaters

We were sitting on our boat the other day when we heard a very loud bang.It turned out to be the water heater which seemed to rupture the tank. The over pressure did not activate, it was a 6 gal. tank from seaward products, has anyone had similar problems. The water system was full, the heater tuned on and the pressure pump was functioning fine. The boat is 6 years old and seen only seasonal use.

It probably rumptured the middle seam. May not have been over-pressure. Time of use probably isn't as important as time on the boat. The tank is just like a small beer keg, so when the seam goes bad... well, you know the rest. The last one I had lasted four years. The one before that was seven. BTW, BoatersWorld.com had the best price by far. Make sure the heat exchanger ports are on the correct side of the one you order. Rick D.

BTW, Paul...

...don't bother paying for a S/S or Aluminum one. That is just the outside cover. They are the same inside. Galvanized steel will do just fine. RD

Actually, Rick...

The better quality water heaters have a glass inner tank...so no corrosion or ruptured seams. The water heaters on my last two boats have been Raritan...one was 11 yrs old when I sold the boat, the other was 21 years old when I sold the boat. Both still in excellent shape. Raritan water heaters are exceptionally well insulated, so they hold the water hot for a long time...and their outer is a polymer, so it can't ever corrode either. They do cost more than the aluminum Seaward...but they last forever.

Yea, Peggy, but .....

...one of the joys of owning a currrent production boat with molded inner liners and interior furniture is about zip flexibility in some of these components since the boat was designed around 'em. In my case, for example, it was the only thing that would fit in the space available. I sure would upgrade if it wasn't such a nightmare and would thank you for pointing that out for sailors who can.
