I have a 84 31' Hunter with a 2gmf Yanmar. I installed a Raritan water heater last year. What I have noticed on a long motor ride the water heats good in the exchanger but it does get to the cold water side of the water heater. Whats the best check valve to use on the cold side(Raritan loves 3/4 pipe fittings, but mine are 1/2). Has any one installed a cut off valve from the engine to the water heater? Thanks Dennis.

I am missing something here.

Dennis: I am missing something here. " but it does get to the cold water side of the water heater." What does this mean?

wicking heat from water heater

I understand what he means> when running under- power for an hour or so the heat for the water heater will wick back though water heater and heat- up the cold water in the boat. I have tried to fix it yet on my boat.

Mike has it. Sorry for the confusion. The hot water in my 6 gal tank wicks into the cold side coming into my tank. When my wife turns on the cold water at the fossit, it takes about l0/15 seconds to get cold.Only happens when I run the engine for a couple of hours or so. Dennis

Expansion

When water heats up it expands, and the only place to take up the added volume is in the cold water piping. Do not add a check valve or you will be blowing hot water out of the temperature/pressure relief valve installed on the water heater. The solution is to connect a small expansion tank in the cold water line just before it enters the water heater.
