I am about to purchase a 86' H31 and the engine water heater hoses were disconnected (boat has a working AC heater). The hoses look like they need to be replaced. I am trying to find out whether I am up against a major piece of work/expenses. Is there inlet/outlet for the heater?

Not a big job

Assuming you have the correct type of water heater, i.e., one that uses the engine water to heat, replacing the hoses is no big deal. I replaced mine earlier this year ('84 31'). Trust me, if I can do it, anyone can. Let me know if you need more info.

oh Don...

Don: You replaced the hoses! Did you happen to replace the heater too? I am curious on how to remove the heater. I am assuming that you need to remove the bulkhead behind the sink to remove the heater!

Water heater access

don, Its a simple job. Access is easy through the starboard cockpit seat hatch. I have an 85' 31. good luck

bleed air out well....

I replaced mine not to bad of a job, hoses cost me $80. The only problem that I had was bleeding all of the air out of the fresh water cooling system on the motor. I suggest you run the motor for a while to be sure it's not going to overheat as soon as you leave the dock. There not much coolant in a 2gm a little bit of air in the system will cause it to overheat...

Yes

I replaced my water heater too. But, I think this was the second replacement. My manual shows a round waterheater and mine already had the rectangular seward heater when i bought it. I replace it with the same thing. There were no bulkheads under the sink in my boat. I am curious, what type of bulkhead is there? Can you see the water heater from the galley inside the cabin or only from the deep lazarette? Would appreciate any info. don

Yes Yes

Don: There is a bulkhead that covers the back of the cabinet under the sink. They have a cut out for the thermostat and the plumbing. The heater in our H'31 1985 is also square/rectangular (not sure of make). I think it is starting to leak. Steve

New heater cost

Thanks for the useful info. If needs to be replaced does anybody have an idea on how much a new heater could cost? Does the order of the hoses (in/out) from the engine to the heate matter?
