I'm trying to get the water system on my 1987 Hunter 28.5 going. I have managed to find the water tank (which bright spark put it under the anchor?). The pressure water works for the cold, although the pump noise is high. I do not seem to be having much luck with the hot water. There is no pressure or heat. I've looked for another switch but there is none on the control panel. I also could not see any switch on the actual heater? Any help will be appreciated! - Mick

Are you new to the boat? If so there are many possibilities. If the boat was winterized then its common to drain the heater and connect the hot lines to the cold lines to facilitate winterizing the water lines. That would explain why you have no heat and no pressure. What kind of heater do you have? Not all work on 117 Volts - some just work off of the engine coolant - then there's no switch and it will only work when the engine is hot. R. Young Hunter 37 "Destiny"

takes time

if your tank ran dry it can take a few mins for the pump to prime...don't ask me why....fill tank and let the pump run....leave h and c faucet open...it will catch....i would turn off the heater though..i'm not sure but it might damage the element without any water in the tank...schaefer

Seaward...

I have a Hunter 285, and this is how it works for me; The hot water heater (seaward 6 gal model) can be heated either by the engine or from AC power (Note: Not DC power). My heater usually heats up after about 20 minutes. NOTE: You must keep the water pressure on, or you may damage your heater. There IS a switch on the control panel, it is on the AC side. Heating via the engine takes forever. I'm guessing 45 minutes. Interestingly enough, Practical sailor last year did a review of water heaters, and Seaward came in last as judged by time to heat, and time that it will keep the water hot. Hope that helps!

There is a switch on the heater.

Mick: There is a reset switch on the heater. If you have a Seaward as Rene mentioned, there is a cover panel with a screw in it. If you remove this screw and some insulation you can see the reset switch. If you ran the heater without water, you may have tripped the switch. You should be able to get cold water out of the heater regardless of any switch. The cold water goes into the bottom and hot water comes out of the top. You should remove the cold water side first and see if any water is going into the tank. Then remove the hot water side (without the power off and no hot water) and see if water will come out. Has it ever worked for you? If not, maybe it has been bypassed!
