Thinking about replacing the water heater on my 1979 H30. Any recommendations? I was thinking about a seaward 6 gallon galvanized model. Measures 13"X13"X19". My current heater is 120V only, can I use a heat exchanger off the motor with my YSM-12? I welcome your opinions. Sam

Couple of problems.

Getting the old one out (cut it into pieces). Getting the new one in (can't cut it into pieces). I am not sure that your are going to have enough heat from the engine to heat the water. I thought that this is why they did not install them on these boats!

H30 water heater

If your engine is raw water cooled, like mine, the engine really doesn't get hot enough to tie into a hot water heater (only 135 degrees). These engines run cool so as to not distill all the salts out of the cooling water and clog the water passages. Don't put a hotter thermostat in it, assuming you could find one. If your engine's got a heat exchanger the engine doesn't come in contact with the raw intake water and it runs hotter, around 185 degrees, and will work fine for producing hot water. Some folks have retrofitted their raw water cooled engines with heat exchangers, but (suprise, suprise) it's an expensive project.

I put in two

steve is right_ out and in is a problem, so i put in two fast response 3 gal varity from GE one below the v-berth for the head area, and one at the original location for the galley. I know -- not marine grade -- but the original one was a standard 6 gal 110 volt if you look at it when you take it out. I did do a little interlocking with some 30 amp relays so that they both cannot come on at the same time to avoid the 110 vac amp draw problem -- this keeps the marinna happy so that i don't trip there service breaker

HW heater

I removed my defunct original hw heater by renting a reciprocating hacksaw and cutting it up. I replaced it with an Ariston heater (Defender, about $150), 110v only; worked great. My YSM-12 didn't get hot enough to support a heat exchanger.

6gal water heater works with raw water cooling

I've got a 2 qm 15 raw water cooled yanmar in my 1980 h33 - 6 gal tank that is heated by the engine - it has to run a while, but I get enough hot water to shower and wash dishes - it will not work as well as it does when connected to 110 volt at the dock. If you really need hot water, go to a propane fired on demand system. Search archives here or at Cruising World web site for ideas on this option. Seems to work well for most people.

Two cylinders or more with fresh water or raw water cooling will give plenty of hot water.
