Water heater hookup

I recently bought a 1993 31' Beneteau with an 18hp FWC 2002 diesel engine. I am in the process of replacing the water heater and found that the current water heater is hooked up to the raw water cooling side of the engine. This is probably why the heater failed. The instructions for the new water heater states that the heater exchanger should be hooked up only to the fresh water side of the engine because of the aluminum exchanger in the water heater. I can not find any connections on the fresh water side to hookup to. It looks like I would need to cut into the fresh water cooling tubes that are on the outside of the heat exchanger. Has anyone hooked up a water heater to this engine before?

Slightly confused

about your definitions of raw water and fresh water. Maybe that's because I'm in a lake and my raw water pump brings in fresh water. I have a different engine in my 1996 Oc281 but I think most waters heaters are similar. The water that circulates through the exchanger is the same water that is the permanant coolant in the engine. Probably has anti-freeze in it. I'm not sure how the heater could heat if it is running cold raw water through it unless it is plumbed in somewhere before the raw water is discharged out the exhaust. If your in saltwater, I can sure see why the exchanger would shoot craps. On mine, the water heater is in reality, just a splice in the coolant hose. The hose is cut and one end hooks on one nipple on the exchanger and the other cut end is hooked on the other exchanger nipple and the water circulates through the encineto, and through the water heater and back to the engine. Good luck Bill

Salty Water

Yes, I sail in salty Cape Cod Bay. What little I can see of the engine and manifold there does not seem to be any hoses in the closed cooling side of the engine, just tubing. Do you have a hand regulator valve to regulate the amount of water that flows through the water heater? The water heater hookup instructions require one in the loop.
