In preparing for put-in, I noticed that there is water coming from the aft sole into the bilge where the keel is bolted to the hull. There is obviously a channel for the water to flow from the aft to this bilge, but there is not bilge pump in this bilge, by design. I was suprised at the water flowing from the aft, since the boat is out of the water. Does anyone know where the water is coming from? My guess is that there must be a compartment aft of the engine in which water may be collecting from leaks in the aft section of the boat. I took about 20 or 30 gallons out of this area before the water stopped coming from the aft. Anyone know the design of the sole in the aft behind the engine? You do not say if your boat was covered for the winter, but the quantity of water removed makes me think it's coming from the cockpit ! Leaking through drain hoses (damaged hoses or loose clamps). Might also be leaking under pedestal (damaged or dried-up caulking).

Eric: That is a lot of water (20-30 gal). You may want to check if the water tank has leaked. You do realize that the area where the packing gland is located is on the outside hull. The engine pan forward to the v-berth is the liner. Water can get trapped in between the hull and the liner. If you had ICE in between the hull and the liner it would have allowed water to accumulate. Since it MAY be warming up enough to thaw, the water may be flowing into the bilge. On our H'31 1985, we have limber holes from the engine pan to the intermediate bilge and also from the intermediate bilge to the main bilge. This allows drainage from the after compartment thru to the main bilge. Now do you think that you could be getting any water down the pedestal or any other area that is leaking into this area. Also if you had a lot of snow in your cockpit, the window in the aft berth may be leaking too.

Look at the "Leak in the Owners Cabin" re H34's in the Big Boats Forum. I had water up to the cabin sole in the main bilge when I opened up my boat a couple of weeks ago. It took the bilge pump more than 30 minutes to pump it out, and created a small lake on the ground. I believe I have traced my leak to loose screws on the pedestal guard feed, combined with frozen scuppers and a cockpit full of ice and snow. The aft cabin was soaked. I went down to the boat today after torrential rains in the past two weeks. Everything was dry, again making me think it only gets in when the water level is at the base of the pedestal. One more possibility
I had a leak where the cockpit drain hose exits the hull to the water, just above the water line when the boat is stationary. I thought I had a hose leak but it turned out that there was some separation in the fiberglass. I fixed it with epoxy.

My 31 was getting water in the aft berth area, mostly when the boat was on land (many gallons.) I let it go for 2 years as an "unsolved mystery." Last year, I finally got into the lazerette and had someone spray water all over the aft section. Turned out the sealant under the fuel fill had completely deteriorated. After reseating it, no more leaks.
