While this hasn't been the greatest summer in Vermont this year we have enjoyed some good winds to sail in. However we have noticed on several occasions that when the boat is beating into good sized waves (for a lake) a leak develops into the forward cabin apparently from the anchor well. Although I haven't ripped anything out yet (that's what off season is for) it seems like the water is being driven into that anchor well drain as we descend into the wave faster than it leaves as we rise . It seems to produce a little fountain of spray that works it's way aft. As well the anchor well drain hole looks quite large. Has anyone had a problem similar and what did you do about it?

This happened to me

Geoff. On my Legend 37, I was puzzled for a long time why rainwater entered the v-berth thru the anchor locker. I had sealed everything that I could see. Hull/deck joints, top of the "pan" inside the anchor well, stancions, etc. Then one day I realized that the anchor well is a fiberglass insert "pan". Along the base if the anchor locker where the pan was glassed in, there was a hairline crack along the fiberglassed seam. I used a silicone sealer and applied it with my finger. It did the trick - no more water in the "Vee".

Check here, too.....

where the anchor latch pin slides into the hull. Hunter has a tendency to drill the latch hole all the way through the hull, or almost all the way through which leads to leaks in the future after the hull flexes a bit. Also, one of the stanchions near the bow carries the running light wires through the hull. This will appear as a leak in the v berth area as well Good luck, Geoff

We had the same problem

We found two places where water was leaking in. The anchor locker drain hose, which can be acessed from the v berth, was cracked and leaked every time water gets into the anchor locker. Also on our 34 someone installed a 12 volt receptical in the anchor locker, which was old and rusted and no longer had a cover over the opening, that leaked water into the v berth. Hope this helps!! Mine still leaks

I too have the same leaking problem, does not leak with rain water just under way . I found the latch pin hole seeping & seald that found the hinge screws seeping & sealed them , tightened all bolts & toe rail new anchor locker drain hose & fittings still the area where the drain hose is gets water in it & the berth area gets damp. Thinking of lifting the chain plate this winter to seal under it, maybe add another bow roller while I'm at it. good luck to you.

Leaks on my 386

Geoff: I had the same problems on my 386. When I was out in heavy seas and my bow would dip into the water and wash over the deck I would always find that my forward compartment mattress would be wet. I proceeded to take the forward wooden cover off where I could access to my windlass from below. I discovered that when the anchor locker was placed that there were gaps in the installation fibreglass. I proceeded to squeeze 3-M marine silicone with a chauking gun into all of the gaps and spaces were I could see light bleeding through. Last weekend I went out in heavy seas to test the boat. My bow dipped in a couple of times and water again washed over the bow. When I returned to port the forward cabin mattress was dry. So I guess in worked. Good Luck... Sam
