Water Coming In Through Coachroof At The Mast

In a strong rain I found water dripping through the mast beam seam. I took
off the plywood on the forward side and saw the 2.25 or 2.5 inch hole where
the mast wiring comes in and water dripping down via the wires. I figure
that this must be fixed before leaving the boat for the winter (on the hard)
but don't know how this area was designed. I'd like to fix either as it was
designed or improve it but don't have any clarity of thought to get going.
If this is a big job is there a temporary fix to get through the winter?

Many thanks,,, BTW I have such infrequent internet access that I didn't try
a search. Sorry.

Dont know about temporary, but this is a common thread that has been solved various ways.

Log into the vega group page and search posts.
Usually ends up being a plastic roof type thing over the hole inside the mast using a plastic drink bottle or pvc pipe or etc.

If you take off your mast, there are other problems you should also solve while it is off.
ie. wires slapping inside the mast making noise...

I used the top of a two liter soda bottle fix. I still haven't found a fix for the wires slapping...or is it the halyards, I'm not quite sure.

When I rewired the mast, I put electrical zip ties on the cable radiating out at various angles. I haven't had any leakage and the zip ties are long enough that they keep the cable more or less centered in the mast so
that the cables don't bang. I am guessing that the zip ties intercept and divert any water running down the cable out to the mast wall where the water runs down and drains outside of the step. Of course I may also have no leakage
because I keep the boat on a mountain lake whose worst weather conditions are rarely more than 4 ft waves and/or 60 knot winds for a very brief period. -Tim

Many thanks guys. The mast is being yanked in a couple of days and I'll
learn what I need to know then. At the time of my "crisis" I'd owned my
first boat less than two weeks.

Last nights rain came in through a handhold instead of the mast. Oh
well,,,,

thanx,,,
