Greetings everyone. We are new to this owners group, and have a question. Lately there has been water collecting below the inboard diesel that does not drain to the bilge. We cannot find a drain pipe to the bilge. Any suggestions?

First things first... where is the water coming from? Find the source and correct it and you won't have to come up with a way to add a drain pipe. I had a 1976 O'day 27 that had a loose strut that was leaking. It was under the gas tank and therefore difficult to diagnose but I could see water trickling in from under the tank. If it's just the stuffing box, maybe that needs to be adjusted or re-built. Are all the hose clamps on the engine tight and thru-hulls tight?

The O'day 39 is the same. Water under the engine can't make it to the bilge. Most use a sponge to keep up with the drip from the cutlass bearing.

Is the engine pan overflowing? Did you just buy the boat? Is the boat in the water....? Lots of questions.

I have an O28 and found similar problem with water not getting from under the engine to the bilge where it could be pumped out. I found that there was a small weep hole between the engine compartment and the bilge channel that sometimes gets plugged up. Look for the hole and stick a wire through to remove the debris. You should see the water lever go down immediately as it flows into the bilge.

Hi Everyone.

It's not a problem with your boat and it's wanted this way. If you have an oil leak on your engine this enclosure will retain it and you won't pump out in nature. I agree with Dannys first, find the source of you water leak.

enjoy.

There is so little room/access to the lowest part of the sump/bilge; I used a small shop vac after cleaning. Any oil removed can be sucked up with those mattress protection pads and properly discarded. You can get a cheap 12 volt unit from the discount auto parts stores. I assume that you have no gasoline on board.

I had an oday 39 that had 2" round openings in the grid pan to allow the water to flow to the bildge so there would always some water under the engine till it got high enough and flow into the bildge

it would flow out the side of the pan under the forward part of the eninge and then into the space under the floor board at the bottom of the companionway, then run forward towards the bilge by way of holes drilled in the grid pan.

The 35 also has a drip pan under the engine that only allows fluides into the bildge if it overflows. We've found that keeping the pan clean can help diagnose the source of fluides that can end up there. Everything turns black if the pan has oil in it. After thorough cleaning we were able to diagnose an antifreez from the plasitic overflow resevior.
