HAs anyone got ay reports for water base bottom paint . In about three more years thats all we will be able to use in Washington state. Ive never heard one good word about them.. I talked to a few sailboat owners in San Diego a few years ago and was told that water base bottom paint is next to useless . Seems they have to get a diver in frequently to clean bottom.

I was impressed. I was using the top of the line Interlux stuff for years, but the $300 a gallon price tag put an end to that a few years ago. I thought I'd give AquaGard a try. The boat was in the drink for two full years and when I finally pulled it, the bottom was easily cleaned with a power wash, and about two thirds to three quarters of the AquaGard was still intact. Actually, better results than I remember with the more expensive brand.

If you mean copper-free paint, I talked to owners in a Shelter Island basin which gave rise to this a few months ago. They were very unimpressed with the performance but for one guy who had a copper-infused resin system. However, it requires a special powered scrubber every month according to him. As far as water based copper paint, the only experience I had was perhaps ten years ago when I tried it on my dinghy. It was a mess in about six months. I stripped it off and recoated. I'm sure that early paint has been vastly improved.

Water Based Bottom Paint

I've been using Pettit Hydrocoat SR for the past two years and am very pleased with the results.

Practical Sailor (if you're not familiar - the "Consumer Reports" of sailing) recently did a comprehensive test of bottom paints that was excellent IMO.

In Washington, copper-based anti fouling paints are being phased out. Zinc-based or non-metal anti fouling paints are what you will have to use there. Has nothing to do with the solvents (or lack of) used in the paints.

A friend of mine in San Diego (who also owns a dive service) is very pleased with the performance he's been getting from Pettit Hydrocoat Eco on his personal boat.

In San Diego, boats are cleaned typically 15 times a year, regardless of what is being used on the bottom.

Having great results with Pettit Hydrocoat on inland lake in Kansas....Much more convenient to use and clean-up. We have a very warm water situation and the high-pressure hose, took everything right off very easily.

Non-copper paint in salt water is drastically different than fresh water, IMHO.

In fresh water, I'd use VC17, like almost everyone I've ever talked to in the Great Lakes.

fstbttms would be the best source for salt water, and, IIRC, he's already mentioned that in many of his earlier posts.

When CU is outlawed due to the damned environmentalists, I'll have to change.

Their concerns are basically meaningless and stupid.

I've been using Petit Hydracoat for several years and I am very pleased occasional slime around the water line, where the light shines, that scrubs right off but other than that when I haul out in the fall the bottom is generally clean. In my case I am in fresh water (the great lakes) but no complaints here It's much easier to work with and does the job.

I have been using Petite Hydrocoat on my boat for years. Boat has never had any other paint on it. Only down side, do not do a touch up and immediately launch. It is water base and will wash off. Wait 24 hours, then launch. I may have a couple of barnacles at haul out, but a quick power wash takes all the slime off easily. My hull is now 16 years old, gets a fresh coat almost every year and has no visable build up.

I've been using Aqua Guard for the past six years in the cold salt water of the Bay of Fundy and along the Maine Coast, works great and the boat has come out clean except for a little scum that washes off with the pressure from a garden hose.

Which AquaGard did you use?

These positive reports on water base are impressive. To me,this is especially so since the curing agent was water and it is sitting all year in the water!
