Water and oil in engine sump.

Hi All,
Over the course of a day or so's sailing I'll end up with about a cupful of
water and a little skim of oil in the sump under the engine on my Vega. The
engine is a md6b, extremely reliable and doesn't seem to use much oil over a
season. Anyone know of any weak areas where I should look for leaks first??
I think the locker lids are a bit suspect but the oil I don't know -
pressure gauge maybe. Not the biggest problem in the world but if I forget
to keep it clean and she heels right over in a gust then the cabin sole ends
up with an oily watery bath. Ugh & slippy!

TIA

Paddy

The previous owner mentioned this as a problem with my MD6B. He said he sighted all over and could not find where it came from. I have yet to investigate it. To solve the problem for now I installed an Oil-Sorbent sheet under the engine to soak up any oil leakage. See this link

This seems to work well.

One item, I noticed while working on the stuffing box, was a greasy/oily mess right under the combi unit. So one possible source of the oil, would be oil seperating out of the combi grease.

Hi Paddy

I expect there is some leakage from the engine to the combi and then out of the combi to the space under the engine. I expect the water could come from a few areas.

1. Seawater pump
2. Sterngland and climbing up the control tube
3. Cooling leakage.

Best bet is to redo the combi. Easy job and you have enough expertise at Hoo with six Vegas there. Ask John Vaughan as he is an expert. Ask Di for his phone number.

Combi Kit is £38 and that includes the sterngland bearings etc and the main engine oil-seal which is the probable cause of the oil under the engine.

If you need more details then give me a call. Tel. 01684 568676

Kind Regards

Thanks for that, Steve. I think that will be on the (ever
increasing) list for this winter. Fleur came out on monday & is now
on the hard at Hoo. Nice end of season run to queenborough over the
weekend & she really was sailing well, not much weed for a season
afloat. Main halyard back to cockpit and slab reefing would be nice
too.

i have had the same problem and found that it was the spring loaded "o" ring
on the shaft of the water impeller. change that and you have solved the
problem.

to get the water out of the oil sump, rinse several times with kerosene till
the kerosene is clear
