Hello fellow Hunter Cherubini Owners,
This is my first posting to the forum as a new owner of a 1980 Hunter 30. I look forward to the much needed guidance of your experience. This is also my first "real" sailboat.

Attached is a picture of the waste system located under the port panel in the v-birth.

Being a newbie, what am I looking at? I was expecting a holding tank on this boat, but this doesn't quite seem like what I was expecting. I see a manual pump, a gate valve, and a seacock. I really do not know how to operate this system and what my maintenance should be. Does this get pumped out like a normal holding tank, etc?

I really need some guidance on how this system works in conjunction with the head.

Where do the hoses on the right lead? My 79 has a tank in that location, and the same style pump, but I've not seen a small tank like that with the air or bleeder fitting on the one hose. Interesting. I'm sure the experts will weigh in soon.

Looks like a previous owner installed unit?? I think the hose at the bottom right is the outlet hose from the tank .. The tee in the picture corner looks like it goes to the pump and then the gate valve thru hull.. The other side of the tee probably goes to the deck pump-out fitting.. capped off on deck. The other big hose with the anti siphon valve looks like the inlet line from the head.. The wrinkly hose is the vent line.. should go to a vent fitting on the side of the hull, just below the hull/deck joint. I think there are many things wrong with this installation that should be corrected.. The best way to explain is to refer you to the West Marine Advisor which has a diagram of what it should look like.. Scroll down to the one that says "our favorite".
http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...d=10001&page=Heads-Holding-Tanks#.UK0V9eQ2W84
Their diagram can be simplified by putting a T where they have a three way in the line, marked 8.. and if below the waterline, the line between 9 and 10 must have a high point (above heeled waterline) with an anti siphon valve .. as is shown on the next diagram .. I think your anti siphon valve is in the wrong hose, but I am not sure of that..
Spend a little time tracing .. replace those old stinky hoses.. Good luck !

The hoses on the right go to the toilet and to the pump out opening on deck.

Ed, it looks like you have a "normal" waste system with a very small holding tank. You should be able to pump waste out at a marina. And also with the gate valve open use the hand pump to remove the waste from the tank. It looks like it should work just fine. You can put some water through the toilet and then pump it out to verify that everything works as you expect. If you haul the boat for the winter you need to put antifreeze in the system so that nothing breaks. Welcome to large boat sailing.

Thanks Paul, do you think that gate valve should be replaced?
