any advise on washing the sheets and running rigging which I just took off of the used boat I just bought? Also, what's the best way to splice line to the sheets to re-run them up the mast? Thanks. Steph

Put them in a pillow case...

and wash them in the washing machine with regular detergent a couple times. Though I used some bleach on mine once, everyone advises against it. You'll be very pleased with the outcome. I just make a few loops of whipping twine to secure the two lines end to end to replace the halyards. It's always worked for me. Good luck....Gary

I had really...

...good luck cleaning dirty, slimy, and crusty running rigging with a 1500 psi power washer. I laid the lines out on my driveway and with the nozzle set for a spray about 4 inches wide, I blasted all the crap and dirt off these lines quickly and easily. Much to my surprise, the clean lines were also much more flexible. Worked nicely for me. I've also had good luck in running the rigging back up the mast by either using a messenger line (installed when I took the line off), or by simply sewing a few stitches of the end of one line to end of the new line with whipping thread, covering the joint with vinyl tape, and hauling away. The key is not making the joint stiff or too large to pass over the masthead sheave.

net bags or pillow cases are good

Steph: We have had good luck in the washing machine. Just use any detergent (I don't think a little bleach would hurt). They just let them air dry. It is best if you have not removed them from the mast to attach a messenger line to the lines before you pull them out. If you have already removed them, you can use a thin messenger line hooked to a piece of chain (like a bicycle chain) to the line and feed it down the mast. Then you can pull the lines through by attaching them to your halyard with some tape.

how good a mechanic

are you? The actual engine rebuild is usually done by an automotive machine shop, an engine overhaul can be done by a mechanic. A rebuild is just that and you get an engine that is as good as new. An overhaul involves new piston rings, rod and main bearings, camshaft bearings, regrinding the valves and honing the cylinders, all new gaskets, the injectors get sent to a shop for cleaning and testing. And the list goes on.

You might try some fabric softener

I juat put mine into a front loading machine add a little detergent and fabric softener, and let her rip. No need to dry them, just spinning will suffice. I would avoid bleach. It has never been necessary to disinfect lines and it does not seem to do that much good compared to its potential weakening of the line. I use duct tape applied diagonally starting with the entry part to attach to the messenger line. I fold over a small part of one corner of the trailing part of the splice so I can more easily remove the tape later. Careful not to pull it backwards if you do that. Others use paper clip or such wire to kind of staple the ends. You can also use thread and you can tape any of these afterwards. The main thing that concerns me is to eliminate any way for the line to get caught up as it passes blocks, etc. I figure the tape will help ease the splice past any tight places.

Washing Machine

I've used the pillow case method with good results but it is best to use a front load washing machine without the agitator. I used to tie messengers to the lines before pulling them out of the mast but now I just use electrical tape and it works fine. Make sure you use a long splice and that it's strong in both directions so it doesn't come apart if you need to pull the halyard back down if it gets stuck going over the sheaves.
