Looking at anew boat and it has what is called a washer/dryer unit. The theory is it washes then it can be switched to a dryer to dry the clothes. Do these things actually work? what are the pro's and cons? Any input appreciated. Thanks Ahbee

They work

Yes, the combo washer/dryers do work. I assume you are talking about the $1000 front loading models with stainless steel drum like the Splendide. The advantage is you set both wash and dry times and you don't have to move clothes from one machine to another. Just don't overload it and keep in mind that drying is more effective if you use a smaller load than the maximum wash load. If it is a non-vented model, it will consume about 5 gallons of water per hour while drying.

They wash great......but

They do a great job washing, but the drying cycle of the non-vented model uses a lot of water when drying and the drying is slow. I can take two or three hours to dry a load. If you can arrange the plumbing for a dryer vent, I highly recomment the vented model. I would really like to have a small home-style washer only. Don't we have life lines for drying laundry? That's why they call us "Sailor Trash."
