Washer / Dryer - Does It Work

We are considering ordering one on a new boat. We will be living aboard. The question: Does it work ???

We didn't get one

When we were looking at 42's the wife wanted to install a w/d. It ended up that we can't because the tv in the aft cabin is installed in the locker where it would go.We ended up taking it up town and having someone do it. It only cost about $15 for a weeks worth of cloths. We would drop them off and pick them up the next day all folded. In about18 months it would pay for it's self. Also theres the problem with power. From people who have a w/d onboard it takes along time to dry. Depending on where you like discharge can be a problem or it will be in the next few years.

Washer/Dryer - YES

Our W/D combo works great and we have used it extensively. The dryer cycle takes a long time and uses water also. I understand that there is a vented model (ours is non-vented model) that is much quicker and uses no water when drying. Therefore, when weather permits, we hang them up and look like real cruisers. We are glad that we got it. The convenience, even at the dock, is worth it alone.

very small loads

Put your space to better use - a workshop or extra berth. Our neighbor has a washer & dryer on their 52' Irwin and stopped using it because she could only put 3 pieces of clothing or one sheet in at a time - W&D are being removed and the space is being remodeled for more practical use. Another neighbor removed their washer & dryer for that reason and because it used up all the fresh water supply and quickly wore down the house batteries. The W&D is a great marketing item but it looks like it has some room for improvement when it comes to implementation./cs/v Twilight

Washers/dryers

I have been living aboard on my passage 42 since 93 and felt that the only thing missing to make my boat a real home was a washer/dryer. I installed one 3 years ago. I love it ... it makes my boat a complete home/yacht.
