Wash down pump orientation

I’m planning on installing the Johnson 5.2GPM washdown pump in my anchor locker on my H460. I was wondering if I could mount it sideways on the bulkhead as in the photo below. Can the input be facedown and output face up or opposite?

(I’m not actually mounting it in the location in the photo. It’s just for illustrative purposes). Does it have to be horizontal feet down? The manual doesn’t say.

I have one of those pumps and it is mounted vertically with the pump head facing down. I mounted it in that orientation because it fit my space and if the pump head is down and has a failure that causes a leak, the water will not soak the motor section.
I'm surprised that the installation manual does not have any mounting guidance.

Thanks Rich. I think it was you who convinced me in a post somewhere to go with this pump! I reread the manual (again) and it does have one sentence about mounting vertically. Don’t know how I missed that. I’ll do that as well because it makes sense in my space. Thanks for confirming!

This is something that I've been thinking about, too. What is your plan to provide source water to the pump? Is there a through-hull nearby that you will connect to?

Great question. After much planning and deliberation, I decided not to use a thruhull. Originally I wanted to Tee into the forward head sink drain as I’ve seen others have done, but I wanted a pump that could be used for other things. For example, bailing out the dinghy, used for freshwater, emergency bilge. So what I did was wired the pump in the anchor locker with a switch. Then took an 8ft 5/8 garden hose and attached it to intake. That hose gets thrown overboard when I want to use the pump. It’s always attached via carabiner to the hatch door, so the end doesn’t get lose. I added some extra nuts/weight on the end to keep it underwater. I can also use that hose in a bucket of freshwater OR stick it in the dinghy. Multiple options! Everything is coiled and out of the way in the anchor locker. Here are a few pics. The green hose is the intake. Let me know if you have more questions or want more pics!

Great idea, Capt Mateo. You could also put the green hose in a gallon of rv antifreeze for winterizing the pump and output hose.

Excellent plan! Thanks for the winterizing reminder. Another easy thing to do without messing with through hulls.
