I am considering purchasing a tiller extension with ball so that I can let go of the tiller while I tend to other things. My boat already has the recesses for the ball but unsure of the length and was hoping to get it shipped before I went to the boat next. I have a Hunter 22 and was thinking that 36" would be plenty?

You may have the wrong idea...a tiller extension with a ball is for hiking out.

not for licking the tiller. You may want to devise a tiller holding system.

hiking extension

My previous boat had the hiking stick with the ball. the ball would rest in a saddle, off to one side, to lock the tiller. The hiking extension was about 18" long, and could expand out to about 36".

tiller extension

You must be referring to a twist lock tiller extension that can extend in varying degrees. The ball I will assume is a stainless steel quick releasing end fitting. Forespar makes two and the mfg. numbers are 104016 and 104017. Check with the HOW chandlrey and if not, any good store should cary them. Hope this helps.

I have already devised a system just not happy with it

yes I have already devised a sort of tiller tamer system but when I have a lot of tension on the rudder for instance if I am under sail and trying to do something singlehanded or if motoring and trying to do something. it tends to ease itself out. My boat already had these recesses where a tiller extension with a ball is designed to go in and lock into these and maintain a strait course. I think 36 inches should be enough. I have seen one in the chandlery here that I will probably be buying soon.

I thought about trying this, but changed my mind!

I use the table stand with an oarlock fastened to the top to hold the tiller while in port and have only given minimal thought to the idea of using it to raise and lower the sails if I ever went single handed. I might work if I was more agile and could move more quickly, but I'm not, yet the thought never goes away 1

i have one of these

a davis instruments tiller tamer is what i use when i want to leave the helm to work sails or get something from down below.it will keep the boat on a straight course for a short time before your weight shifting on the boat makes it change course.its $30 from west marine and easy to install. the ideal solution is a tillerpilot but those run a grand or so and take longer to install and involve the electrical system.
