Since I am rebuilding the galley, I decided it would be a good time to replace the sink drain valve. It no longer opened or closed. The wheel kept on turning. I ground the thru hull head and lightly tapped the valve on the inside with pliers to see if I needed a hammer. To my surprise the valve split in half.
On that note, I aproched the head valve and tried to unscew it. It promptly broke the treads on the thru hull. It had about 3 treads in.
Well, after that I decided they all had to go. In addition, the two small ones were only 1/2" and I could not find seacocks that small. I replaced them with 3/4" seacocks. I added an extra one for the future A/C pump. So I purchased two 1 1/2 and three 3/4 seacocks. Now I still need to round up the new thru hulls, screens and hose adapters.
By the way, the 1/2" spacer Hunter glued with 5200 to the hull for the valve to sit on had paper on it so I assumed it was masonite, however after removing it I realised it was MDO sign board, a plywood product used outdoors for signs. It has no voids, waterproof glue and a paper face. I may use the same MDO to make the new spacers. They lasted 30 years without a problem.
My wife said I could have bought her jewelry for what I spent on these items. (and she only saw the first invoice). At least I know were her priorities are.;)

Now that is really scary. Actually split open! I have the 3/4" seacock on the engine thru-hull which is also where I get my A/C cooling. But my other two thru-hulls are still original. I do have a ball-valve on the head inlet but the sink drain is original. Because the boat spent twenty years in fresh water it still looks and works well. But I still have it on my to-do list. Not sure why you bought so many, there are only three holes in the bottom of my boat. You will sleep much better with that project finished.

Jose, I replaced the vanity sink thru hull and valve this fall. I replaced the stock 1.5" with a 1.00", as the 1.5" seemed like overkill. Still have the 1.5" on the galley sink, since more likley to clog. Replaced all the gate valves in 2001 when I bought the 1984 boat.

Ed:
I presently have two 1 1/2, one for the holding tank out, under the V berth and one for the galley sink. I also have two 1/2 valves, one for the head intake and one for the engine intake. I am replacing the two 1 1/2 with new ones and replacing the 1/2" ones wiyh 3/4" with screens. I also added an extra one for the A/C since I am already knee deep in it. Otherwise I would add a T for the A/C like you did.

Seattle Scott: My vanity sink is plumbed with a regular faucet with pull up stopper. This drain tail piece hooks up to a standard 1 1/4 household P trap and a hose to a new S.S. thru hull. I have consided changing that set up with a seacock also. I am wandering if during a long reach leg, that thru hull may be very well submerged for long periods of time and suck water in.

Steve: I trolled the net for a week looking at prices. I got one 3/4 seacock
on Ebay for 25.00 since no one else bidded on it. The seller advised me that if I needed additional ones he would honor the same price and free freight. I purchased the two additional ones at the same cost and he sold me the 1 1/2 ones for 60.00 each. They may be knock offs but they are 85-5-5-5 marine bronze with bronze/plated solid ball, grounding screw, drain valve and reversable SS handle. They are private labeled with his company's name. Danard Marine. He was very helpfull and shipped super fast. He has a store on Ebay under Danard Marine Products.
Now I just spent another 250 on the rest of the thru hulls and hose fittings. Still a bargain. That's a lot of peace of mind for 450. Now for the sweat and the tears. Installation!!

Forgot about you "overboard" guys. Mine just has a big ol' cap on it. Actually it should not be that difficult of a project. You have the galley apart, that's the tough one. And didn't you say the galley thru-hull is already ground off from the outside?

Do you have to replace the tank overboard thru-hull or can you use that one? Do you really need a seacock there? Can you even buy 1.5" ball-valves?

For the 1/2" to 3/4" hole change I did the following. I used a 1/2" hole saw and cut a hole in 3/4" plywood. Then I used that plug from the hole and glassed it into the old thru-hull hole. The small hole in the middle became the guide for the 3/4" hole saw. That hole is almost 1" deep and you need the original angle. I also glassed in a new bed for the seacock using 1/4" plywood. Someday I will do the head and the galley.

Jose, If your vanity thru-hull is below the water line,( like mine) at least you should have a ball value shut off vavue screwed on the thru hull, which I do, which in addtional to safty, allows you to shut off the vanity drain when under way to stop the gurggling sound. Scott
