Want to buy a 26' American Marine

I found a 1971 26' American Marine sailboat. I'm over 6 feet tall and I can stand up inside it. I'm new to sailing and comfort is a top priority. Is anyone familiar with this boat. Sail ability, reliability etc. I will be sailing in the Tampa Bay Fl. area and staying on it overnights on weekends.....ed

Yes, a friend bought one two years ago. I've sailed it several times. I was impress with how solid and stable it is. Like many boats from that period the hull is very thick.

It is under powered, making it a great starter/family boat.

Original parts are non-existent, so do-it-yourself skills help.

As Dave has mentioned, I am the friend who bought a used 26' American, He is also my sailing instructor coach. I am almost 6'5" and when I bought the boat, I didn't even know that it has a well to stand up in. I bought it in the winter of Jan 2010 and it was all frozen up and could not get in the cockpit or the through the companion way to see inside.

I do know that there have been a lot of Americans in Florida. I have a friend in Naples who use to own 2 26's for his family to sail in. Now he has a 42' Hunter Center Cockpit. Dave and I and our wives sailed with him in the first week of April last spring.

I have made a ton of modifications in mine since I got her. I have more on the drawing board for this spring before we put her in the water.

From my understaninding, that was a west coast boat which went out of buisness either in the 70's or 80's.
