HELP PLEASE!!!! I have a 1979 hunter 33 with a hot water tank that runs off my saltwater cooled yanmar is there any way to get the water tank hotter off this system. I thought of putting n an inverter to heat it up but that would drain the batteries fast etc. thanks

Thermostat?

John: Check your thermostat. Sounds like it is frozen open so your engine is not heating up to the proper operating temp. My friends that have these engines (raw water cooling) don't seem to have this problem. Obviously works OK on the AC side?

Hot water while cruisin'

We've had our Hunter 33 since November, 1999, and have noticed that the water is sufficiently warm enough for two adults to take a comfortable shower. It could be as Mr. dion says, your thermostat is stuck in the open position. It's difficult...without some kind of temperature guage...to determine if your engine is up to snuff!

I don't even have that......

I am interested in the set-up you have now. If I understand it, you have a raw water cooled engine. Where does the water heater connect to the engine ???? I know you are not happy with this set up but, can we get warm water out of it ??????

hot

My raw water cooled engine runs from 110-120, and always has, even in the really hot waters of the Sea of Cortez. It is hard to get a raw water cooled engine to put out water that is really hot enough, plus you have salt water in the water heater elements. I replaced the heater with an all electric 9 liter Rheem.(saved a lot of space, too). It heats up really quickly on a big inverter (load is 1500 watts or 135amps). I have a big battery bank, and even with only a smart regulated 55 amp alternator, I bet I get hotter water faster than I would with the engine cooling water. I did have a really big alternator, but it is just too big for the 15 horse Yanmar to run without strain. My system even works when peacefully at anchor....then replace the charge the next morning while the motor is running to up the anchor, get underway, raise sails, etc. Good luck
