I am considering purchasing a 1981 Macgregor 26ft and am new to sailing. What questions should I be asking? Owner says that the boat is ready for sailing - He states that all sails are in good condition. It has been sitting in the Great Salt Lake; is this a concern? Any information would be appreciated.

Encrusted in salt

Loy, I would be very hesitant regarding a boat that had been "sitting in the Great Salt Lake" for any length of time. I stopped over at the State Park/Marina on I-80 en-route to California this summer and looked at the boats in the slips. They all were in need of a good rinse, and I would not trust any fittings that were not stainless steel. What happens to an outboard that has been immersed in 27% salt water? Should you go ahead with the deal you might name your boat "Lot's Wife".
