Does anyone know what the first year was that the walk thru transom was available on the mid size hunter designs. Any comments on this significant design change?

1986?

That's my guess. In 1986 the Hunter Legend 35 had a walk through transom. Except the Hunter 54 that was introduced in 1981 (is that right?) had a walk thru transom, but you said midsized. Opinions on this feature. Makes a nice spot to get on and off the boat particularly from the water or dinghy. Makes installing a windvane a little more difficult. Makes having dinghy davits a real trade off. Combined with a reverse transom you lose interior volume and cockpit space. You could "potentially" get a lot of water in the cockpit from a breaking wave. The water will drain out REALLY fast afterwards though. In the end I don't think it is a good or bad, just different. I've had both and wouldn't choose a boat because it had that feature or not.

look at Boat Info page

There are good photos in the Boat Info section on HOW of the different transoms from the Hunter 35 and the 35.5. The 35.5 beginning in 1989 I believe, has the seat, whereas the 35 just has the ladder and opening without the seat. Trevor

Buy the walk through boat!

If you can, buy the walk through boat. They are the prefered by most people these days, and your boat will sell better when you decide to move up.

Walk thru is the best thing since "sliced bread"

I've had both, and walk thru is the only way to go in my opinion. Climbing up the transom and over the rail from the dinghy on conventional transoms is much more difficult than stepping onto the swim platform on the walk thru transoms (especially after a few hours at the beach bar!)
