Waiting for Sandy

I see that I forgot to turn the SPOT on when I left Solomons. I tend to need a checklist when I've been sitting in one place for a while.

I'm in a quite secure slip in Oxford's well protected Town Creek at the invitation of a friend. This seemed like a better bet than my berth near the harbor entrance in Solomons when I came over here a couple days ago but it now appears that I'll only be 50 miles from the projected landfall. That puts it in someone-shooting-at-an-apple-on-your-head territory but winds are still predicted to be less than 40 kts in the gusts here as it's all land between Oxford and Lewes where it looks like Sandy will come ashore.

The winds will blow right down the creek but the fetch is only about half a mile and I've ridden out worse than that at anchor. My friend's 45 footer is to windward on the other side of the solid dock. Storm surge should not be a problem here with N, NE winds blowing water down the bay.

Strong NW winds will probably keep me here until near the end of next week but I have a number of friends in town and am enjoying a respite from the wandering life. I have plenty of books to wait out the biblical rains predicted. I probably should go out and start rounding up animals two by two though.

Imagine if you were back at your anchorage at Cape Henlopen! This sounds like it could be a serious storm for us with all the rain. The news is actually talking about heavy snow to the west of us. It looks like a weekend of preparation for both the boat and the yard.

Just got in from our last week long sailing adventure east and had to check in with you. The docks are buzzing with talks of Sandy. We're glad you're tucked in safe and have plenty to keep you occupied :)

Good article on what's coming:

http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/historic-sandy-targets-new-yor/701206

I'll be in a house with my friend watching the boats about 75 feet away through the big windows. The slip is well positioned. There will be a partial lee from the worst winds and the one tree that could come down on the deck won't be directly upwind. It's also unlikely that any loose boats could blow down on the dock. They should end up across the creek.

Note in the article graphic that no coastal flooding is predicted for this area. Flying debris and the aftermath are my biggest concern.
