Waikiki, here we come!

If you want some waterfall hikes try Manoa Valley waterfall (Honolulu side of the island) or Maunawili Falls (Kailua side) both good hikes, Manoa is much easier. Waimea falls is a tourist attraction (not bad, but not a hike). Sacred falls was great, but is now closed, flash flooding caused too many casualties).
For sailing, there are Wednesday evening races from the Kaneohe yacht club, and Friday night from the Ala Wai yacht harbor in Waikiki. Nice fireworks every Friday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village by the Ala Wai. Due to various (ridiculous) state laws you will find few affordable day charters. Do not miss trying Leonard's malasadas (trust me - Google it, not far from Waikiki).

As for Waikiki, its grossly overrated... Get out of there and enjoy the more remote parts of the island.
I agree with this. Waikiki is tourist-central. There are *so* many places that are prettier and more like "real Hawai'i".

If a person is going to Oahu, I generally recommend a couple of things.
-- a "tourist day". Walk along Waikiki beach, enjoy the sights. Maybe take a surfing class down by the Outrigger. etc. Hike to the top of Diamond Head if you feel like it - go very early in the day, if you do, it gets hot, but the view is awesome. Bring water. I used to suggest spending time wandering through the International Marketplace; sad that it's gone now.
-- a "history" day. Pearl Harbor, Arizona Memorial, tour of the Missouri, etc. The Bowfin is cool, too. Then head to Iolani Palace, the Mission House museum or the Hawaii Maritime Center. If you want to make a day of it, head to the Bishop museum. Be sure to spend lots of time outside, though, no point in being in Hawaii if you're going to stay indoors all day.
-- a "scenery" day - drive over the mountains on the Pali Highway toward Kaneohe. At the coast, turn right to go to Blowhole, Koko Head, Hanauma Bay... or left to go up the coast toward the Polynesian Cultural Center (which is *very* touristy, but still sorta interesting). Fortify yourselves on the way with a stop at Cinnamon's restaurant/bakery in Kailua
-- and, a "relax" day - drive up through the pineapple fields, stop at the Dole center on the way, then follow Kamehaha Highway to Haleiwa. Have a plate lunch, be sure to get a shave ice at Matsumotos, then meander up the north shore enjoying the laid-back feel (and, this time of year, maybe even some big-wave surfers to watch). Find a beach that appeals to you and chill for a while. Then cruise up to Waimea Falls park, and maybe a nice sunset dinner at the Turtle Bay resort...

MANY other things to do. And lots of things worth re-doing. But... at least that'll give you a range of stuff and give you a sense of what the island has to offer.

Oh, and if you like seafood? Definitely get out of Waikiki. The restaurants (especially along the beach) are both touristy and expensive. The hole-in-the wall places (shrimp trucks, small poke shops, sushi, etc) will "break your mouth" ;-)

Well, we made it there and back already! All suggestions were considered. My favorite beach (by far) was at Makapu'u Point. The hike to the lighthouse was excellent as well. We visited the north shore, hoping to see some action at Pipe Masters, but surf wasn't up for the competition. Still, some good waves to watch some surfing. I surfed in front of Dukes. We had drinks and apps at Dukes. Climbed Diamond Head. Watched humpback whales from a snorkel catamaran on the west coastline. And, we did lots of shopping in Waikiki and visited the Polynesian Center (very enjoyable). All in all, relaxing and great to visit the beaches in December. My surfing instructor said that the water is "freezing". I told him that it is easily warmer than the surf in Jersey during the heat of summer. He thought that was funny!
The last time we visited Waikiki was 17 years ago, so the changes were dramatic and a huge improvement as far as I can remember. Great shopping and countless places to eat, so decision making was stress-free. As far as beaches go, Waikiki has way too much dead reef and my toes are all skinned up as a result. We found the best sandy beaches at a variety of places, but I wasn't very enthused about Kailua. (We did stop at a plaza in Kailua for pizza slices where Pres. Obama gets shave ice - as we found the TV camera crews preparing for the "Visit" the next day.) We found the long crescent-shaped beach at Waimanalo Bay to be spectacular for powder-like sand, gentle waves, and sheer beauty, if not for the impoverished town and homeless population on the beach. Makapu'u beach had some behemoth on-shore surf break to swim through for swimming, which I loved and pummeled Sue. The North Shore seems to be mostly reserved for surfing (at least in the winter), and it would have felt odd to go into the water for swimming, so we just watched surfing for a short while. Aloha and Mahalo to all!

Diamond Head?
Yes! With the crowds, and enjoyable for sure! We used the trolley bus to reach Diamond Head that day. We also stopped (the next day) to see the Halona blow hole, which was not operating that day. We peered into the Halona Beach Cove and there were swimmers in there. Sue didn't want to descend the slope. If I had known at the time that it is the location for the famous scene in From Here to Eternity (Burt Lancaster / Deborah Kerr), I would have insisted on a re-enactment!
