while i have never gotten one so far, I have been thinking about a Vessel safety check. Are they yearly, or a one time shot?

Vessel Safety Check

I had one of these done by the auxiliary and the next week got boarded by the real coast guard. The VSC sticker didn't mean anything to them and they conducted their own inspection. The auxiliary inspection is good as an educational tool but once you understand the regulations you can and should do your own inspection. e.g. making sure your flares are current, extinguisher charged, right amount of life jackets, etc.

Always good to have

I am an ex-boarding officer with the Coast Guard. Any free inspection is good. The CMS or VSC sticker doesn't stop the Coast Guard from boarding your vessel, but they do note it on the 4100 form they fill out. From past expereience the auxiliary regulations combine the federal laws and the state laws you are located in, so the auxiliary's requirements might be more strict because they also require state laws that the regular Coast Guard does not enforce.
