I have Volvo tmd22 engine in 450. I am using about 1 Qt. oil every 35 hours. This does not seem right and i cannot get straight answer from Volvo. Does anyone have this problem, and does anyone have any idea why I would use this much. No oil in engine room floor, or any leaks at all detected. I already spent $1,000 and had to have Turbo torn apart and parts replaced. Do not know if that could have been part of the problem and have not used boat enough yet to re-check oil consumption.

Oil Analysis

You may have already done this.. but having an oil sample analysis done might reveal some new information regarding bearings, pistons etc.. It cost about $30 .. and the sample only takes about 4 oz of hot/warm oil (after engine has run awhile so that stuff in oil does not separate)

Oil use

Unfortunately, an oil analysis will need 3 consecutive samples to get a trend, unless there is a very serious problem. If the turbo was the cause, the inside of the pipe going from the compressor side of the turbo to the engine intake would be wet with oil. This would indicate a failed turbo seal. Other causes could be; -A change to a thinner oil -High engine temp causing the oil to thin out -Restricted intake or air filter. This will case the turbo to suck oil from the center seal into the compressor side of the turbo. -Restricted or blocked crankcase vent. -Worn rings & low compression/overloaded engine. Under a load there would be blow-by comming out of the crankcase vent or dip stick tube. -The drain back line from the bottom of the turbo to the crankcase may be blocked or restricted -Oil leaking into the trans. On some engines engine oil may leak past the rear seal into the trans. check the oil level in the trans. How many hrs. on the engine and when did you first notice this problem?

Glazed Bores?

Suggest having a compression check done. Good luck.

I'd try some additive

Jerry: I would suggest that you go to a diesel shop and explain your problem. They may have some oil additive. It is probably either sticky rings or a glazed bores. The Marine Volvo engines of the past seem to smoke more than most engines. Your consumption seems very high. I would think you should run your engine at the highest permited RPM for several hours after adding an additive. Be sure to change your oil before adding any additives. This can also be a problem with a Yanmar if it is not run at 70-80% of max rated RPM when run the engine for longer periods of time.

Have you tried Synthetic Oil?

I do Believe that the Volvo BURNS oil when run at the 75% RPM levels, as the Volvo manual recommends, but on my 3 week trip I found that runnung at lower RPM's @2500-3000 does reduce oil consumption. I too think feel that oil consumption is a bit excessive but at least I don't have the excessive smoke problem that exhibits itself in the Yanmar equipped 450's. You never get a straight answere from VOLVO. Their attitude in the USA customer service center is non-helpful, this has been my experience to date. I also would recommed Synthetic as I use in my turbo diesel car. Carpe Diem
