The Volvo Penta engine model MD17C on my S2 yacht has stopped pumping water and overheats. I changed the impeller which didn't look bad anyhow but no luck. What else could be causing this problem. It's been at the mooring for a couple years now

First check to see if you have a restriction in the water inlet. Close the seacock and remove the hose. Open the seacock slowly to check for water flow. Then check the strainer basket. If all is OK remove the output hose from the pump and crank the engine. If water is flowing you have a restricted heat exchanger.

Thanks ,I'll give it a try

I'll try to get out to the boat on Sunday and try what you suggested. The engine is seawater cooled though.

My money goes to

I would bet a round that you have either a stopped up water intake, or a strainer full of crud. One of the two. The previous instructions should get you going again. Also check the hoses and make sure one of them isn't kinked and limiting water flow. If you have a lot of weeds and stuff in the water, look to the strainer. Barnacles and small zebra mussels can clog up an intake pretty quick. Since your raw water cooled, next would be the mixing elbow on the exhaust clogged up. That is the hardest to fix, of the possible problems.

Re: My money goes to

One year I was looking over the bottom of my boat and found that I had very nearly pluged the water intake strainer with bottom paint. ten minutes with a pocket knife opened the slots and all was well. I am more careful now.

If, after you check out the intake strainer and hose you find them unobstructed, and if you have run aground recently, try checking the cover plate on your engine's water pump. Sand and silt stirred up trying to power off of a grounding can score the plate enough that the pump will not work even with a new impeller. If this proves to be the problem, you can sand the plate flat with a flat sanding block and wet/dry paper. 120 grit to get rid of the scoring and 400 grit to polish.
