I hate them. Never liked them on a motor run-about, and they have no place on an ocean-going sailboat. So before I rip them out and have them replaced with a set of proper single-action transmission/engine controls from Morse-Teleflex, maybe someone can illuminate me with the secrets of adjusting Volvo Penta controls? They bind, jam, and have the feel of cheap plastic crap.

No, they don't need oil. No, they are not fouled. No, they are not frayed. Yes, they may have bollixed the Kanzaki transmission, but hopefully I have destroyed them short of that outcome.

Best thing Volvo ever made

I am not a Volvo fan as far as their engines go but I must say their single lever engine controls are really good. I have had them on three boats and they worked flawlessly even when the handle broke off (caught by mainsheet during jibe) and I used a pair of vice grips as the handle.

I don't know who makes it, but the single-lever control on my boat works great. I much prefer it to the two-fisted controls.

Kanzaki KBW20-1 transmission?

After going through the shift linkage to look for loose, bent, parts and cables I can find nothing wrong. Strangely enough after sitting for a few days it shifts fine. The neutral seems positive, as do the forward / reverse detents. On start it shifts fine. I'm beginning to suspect the the Kanzaki KBW20-1 has something going on. It runs ATF oil, and the level is fine. Hard shifting presents itself when the engine is well warmed up.
