I believe I have an isolated starter on my VP 2002 diesel engine. This is in a 1991 beneteau first 310. The starter I pulled from the boat had a negative on the back end going to the battery.
I believe the part number is 872888, but that doesn’t seem to have the larger bolt and nut for the negative wire to the battery (creating the isolation).
1. Am I correct it’s isolated
2. can I put the negative on the small bolts
3. Is there a better / different part number.

Green pic is back of original starter
none of the new starters seem to say anything about being isolated vs non isolated.
thanks for your help

Looks like standard stuff in those pictures. I've never see an isolated starter, they probably exist though.

FWIW, my VP2002 in my old 88 Beneteau F285 was very reliable. I think it may have had an isolated alternator.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up attaching the negative wire from the alternator and the negative from the battery (both were attached to the old bolt on back of the starter) to the engine block, which worked.
thanks again.
