Anyone going to see the Volvo Ocean Race boats in Boston? Only stop in North America.. They finished the leg from Rio to Boston and will be in Boston until May 16. There is an In Port race on Saturday May 9.. Info at www.volvooceanraceatfanpierboston.com
I was going there anyway to visit some folks so I am looking forward to dragging them to the pier! Highest tech fastest monohulls .. should be interesting if they'll let us actually see 'em!

Kloudie- great post!

that 3 minute clip jump-started my day! Part of me wishes I was on one of those boats, the other part (reality) was glad I wasn't! I can't imagine going up the stick during a race like that. One of my favorite sayings is not much bad can happen at 5 miles per hour, but the ONLY things my sailing has in commom with them is wind and water...

Anyone know if there's television with on boat cameras? I just don't care for watching from helicopters and such-

Yes.. Go to http://www.volvooceanrace.org/
click on, or roll over Multimedia and select Video gallery from the drop down. Some great stuff.. Yes, the race stuff... I have myself said at the finish of a long multinight race that I'd never do that again.. then about a year or so later, I am thinking "that wasn't so bad" .. then the next year its "that was fun.. lets go!"

They are wild boats and several of my sailing heroes are sailing them but...

The motorized Canting Keel is a silly affectation of deranged rating rules motivated by absurd prejudice!

Yes.. I agree, Tom. It should be called "swinging ballast" instead of keel because the daggerboards do almost all of the lateral resistance when going upwind or reaching.. The boats couldn't go as fast as they do without the movable ballast to keep 'em upright.. Putting the weight on a long stick minimizes the amount necessary. ... but it has no meaning in the world of normal sailors..

OOPS you are right, Sailorman.. Most are a bit off level (except for cat sailors) and I guess we like it that way !

Hell, someday they will just have to put hydrofoils on them boats like the Flying Moths. That could be fun!

I am already (virtually) in Boston after sailing my virtual boat Kristall in the Volvo Ocean Race Game. I have sailed all legs and have had a great time, although it's so addictive and a real time waster - fun though.
