Volvo MD2B Raw Water seeping into oil

Ok guys,

I found that the volume of liquid in my oil pan has increased since changing the oil 4 days ago. So we have water seeping in.

I need suggestions on what to pull first. The cooling manifold or the heads to check head gaskets?

Since this is a simple engine I am going to attempt it myself.

Is there anyplace else I need to look? I have a Volvo dealer 45 minutes away with access to parts and advice.

Thanks,
SailMaster

If your water pump is gear driven directly off the crankcase, It may be leaking water through the seal into the crankcase. If it is belt driven, that is not it. Not familiar with that engine, but have had that problem on Westerbekes and Universals where the pump is direct drive.

Well the water pump is gear driven. And the good news is that I have the water pump rebuild kit AND the extra seals in stock. That was one of the items on my list to do.

To confirm it is water seeping in into the oil there must be emulsification, it turns the oil into a gray color gel. On the other hand if it is fuel leaking into the crankcase then it raises the level and thins the oil but retains color.

Hi Benny,

During the previous oil change we had an extra quart and a half of water mixed in with the oil. So I am 99 percent sure that this is water. I will run it prior to changing it to verify though.

It appears that I overfilled the oil when adding new stuff. No water found in the oil after running it. Thank you to all for the advice.
