Volvo Dripless Shaft Seal Greasing Practical Question

Hi all,

I've installed a Volvo dripless shaft seal and am excited to have a (relatively) dry bilge this season!

However, I have a question about greasing the seal: I understand the method of squeezing grease in using a straw. However, one thing isn't clear to me: should the grease be injected in at just one spot (IE under the seal on top of the shaft, relying on the shaft rotation to spread the grease), or should I try to inject around the shaft (top, bottom sides)?

A quick sharing of your experiences is appreciated.

I only put the grease in one place that’s most accessible. I figure it will get spread around plenty by the shaft spinning. Been doing it that way for 10 years with no problems. Also remember not to overdo it with the grease. If you pack the whole seal with too much water won’t be able to get to it and keep it cool. Just a pinch once a year should be fine.

Rotation of the shaft will distribute grease around the seal, so injection of the grease at one point of entry is sufficient. After viewing the construction of the seal, I inject grease at 11/2” from the lip, 3/4” from the lip, & finally at 1/2”, to ensure grease is added to three distinct compartments. Don‘t over Lubricate; one straw is sufficient for he entire seal.
