Project MARC (Medical Assistance to Remote Communities) is preparing to send four teams of volunteers and a small, catamaran-based outpatient clinic to some of the most remote communities on the islands of Ambrym, Malekula and possibly, Espiritu Santo, in the Vanuatu archipelago during the months of June, July, August and September, 2001. Although composition varies, most teams will consist of a physician, a dentist, a nurse or EMT, a teacher and several technicians (mechanical, electrical, and/or medical). With the collaboration of the Vanuatu Ministry of Health each team will spend close to 4 weeks in Vanuatu while offering free medical assistance, training local villagers and upgrading medical aid posts as well as schools. Our Hunter Legend 43 "Rivendel II" will ferry volunteers and supplies between Port Vila (Efate Island) and the remote anchorages of "Flying Angel", the 42 ft Wharram MK4 catamaran serving as outpatient clinic and team quarters. All team members will also have a chance to crew on "Rivendel II" while we explore new, often uncharted anchorages for the 2002 season. On the negative side of the equation: there are definite risks involved (particularly malaria), volunteers pay for their own travel plus cost of living and the tropical (marine rainforest) climate demands a fairly robust constitution. On the plus side: you will get to know some of the most exotic and least visited places in the South Pacific where many of the old customs are still honored (minus the head-hunting). The memories of laughing children, dugout canoes, reef-ringed bays, volcanoes, flowers, masks and dances will haunt you for the rest of your days! Unless there are cancellations, the August team (to NE Malekula) is complete, the June team (to N Ambrym) only needs a dentist, the September team (probably W Espiritu Santo) can use a teacher and a technician (electrical or medical) and the July team (SE Malekula) wants a physician, a nurse, a teacher and one or two technicians. If you have any of these skills, are interested in participating and want to know more about the details, please send an e-mail message to <meuzelaar@mail.marc.utah.edu>. Flying Dutchman
