I would appreciate some advice on anchoring or docking in and around Point Judith, specifically, close to Galilee. My boat is in Westport, MA, adn my son is renting a house in Narragansett, about 1 mile from the entrance to Point Judith Pond (he's attending the University of Rhode Island, mechanical engineering). We're hoping we can drop the hook and dinghy in to the Galilee side to pick him up. Thanks, jv

Been there a several times

Anchoring in Harbor of Refuge (The outer harbor) is pretty straight forward. It is alittle bumpy in any kind of blow, but holding is good. I have always gone all the way up in the southern corner to stay out of wakes and wind driven waves, but that puts you father from the beach at Galilee. I usually stay at the dock on the other side, up inside the harbor. What used to be called PT. Judith Marinia and the one just south of it are now one marina, with nice facilities. I have dinked across to PT. Jude from there for diner or ice cream. I could give you more detail if I had my chart in front of me. $$$$$$

Stayed at the new Marina our first night out last year on delivery of my new old boat to ME. Pulled in in the fog, looked very uncertain as to anchorage, my first night w/boat, I opted for Marina. $3/ft, same as I paid in Boston several nights later, except $3 for Point Judith ?!? Kinda pricey. Anchoring outside looks OK, inside is tight. I suppose that is why they get away with $3.

Remember if you anchor in PJ Harbor of Refuge...

...to stay to the East of the CG buoy because it shoals out quickly towards the breakwater. Rememnber that if it is windy at night, that the water will stay flat but the wind will continue to blow. Also plan to wake early. Many sport fishing boats leave early in the morning and create wakes that will certainly wake you up. Also, as an alternative, there is a channel that goes up into the pond (Pt. Judith pond) and that about a mile up you can anchor just North of Plato Island. But be sure that you stay in the channel going up because of thin water on both sides going in. Once behind the island there is a place to anchor. Be sure to check the charts because the anchorage is small. And check your depth.
