On Thursday April 12 I will be in Newport R.I. with the afternoon to kill. Any suggestions as to yards/marinas/clubs/boat stores/ to visit to make it interesting ? I could also crew for someone going out for a few hours. In that case I would be happy to bring the beer.

My Favorite Place

Newport RI is one of my favorite places. The entire downtown area is on the water. behind all the shops are some great cruiser and lots of yachts belonging to the rich and famous :) The eateries are first rate. At sunset walk out towards Goat Island, 2 blocks away, to the bridge and stop looking West towards the Newport Bridge and see one of the world's best sunsets! Also if you have time the mansions are a great take, tours are readily available. Concerts are often going on out at the old Fort. All downtown is walking, no cars needed, and the shopping is great too! Enjoy, I'll be there for the boat show on Thursday and Friday in Spetember. Bob Knott H380

Still a bit early

It will still be a bit early, but some boat will be coming out. Be sure to walk along Thames St. which is along the waterfront. Duck into the various piers and alleys for an interesting view of different shops. As you continue south along Thames Street, you will eventually come onto The Armchair Sailor nautical book store on your right. It's easy to spend a couple hours there. Want some good chowder? Stop into the Black Pearl - award-winning. Have fun. It's a great place.

Agree with Paul......

Paul stole my thunder about the Black Pearl. Definitely stop in for good milk chowder. The shops down there are a lot of fun to walk around in and shop, but bring your wallet and make sure it's full as it can be a bit pricey. If you like tennis, the International Tennis Hall of Fame is in Newport, about 10 minute walk from the water.

Return from Newport, R.I..

Thanks Bob, Paul and Michael. Just returned today from a 2-day business trip to Newport. Stayed at the Viking. Paul was right, it was a bit early in season, and of course temp was real chilly this week. Most of the mansions were not yet opened to visitors. And yes, the Black Pearl definitely had the best chowder I've ever had ! Certainly worth going back for a long week-end. Thanks again.
