Rex,
I am unaware of any Virginia STATE (personal) property tax (on boats). Neither I, nor anyone I know, knows of, or has ever paid any such tax.....However, each locality (city or county) in Virginia DOES levy a personal property tax on boats, cars, and certain other tangibile personal property. You will have to ck w/ your locality to find out the tax rate there.... About 7 years ago, Portsmouth, Va.(to encourage people to bring their boats there) lowered its personal property tax on boats to $.01 per $100.00 value .... effectively eliminating their personal prop. tax on boats (the tax on a boat valued at $100,000.00 became $10.00 ! !) The boating community in the entire area was delighted and Portsmouth's marinas quickly filled up and had waiting lists to get in). Last year, Norfolk finally came around and lowered its tax rate to the same as Portsmouth, quicky followed by Va. Beach.... So, to the delight of all South Hampton Roads boat owners, marina operators, boat dealers, etc., etc., this area is now, effectively , a tax sanctuary for boaters..... and boating flourshes here.If you keep your boat in one of these localities for more than 6 months out of each year, you will be taxed by that locality at its tax rate ($.01 per $100.00). If you then choose to use your boat somewhere else, because you have paid the tax to your "domiciling" (home port) city, you will not be charged tax in any other locality (even though the rate there may be much higher)...
