Is this a reliable engine? I know from this forum that it is expensive to repair but I want to know if this thing will run without constintly hassling with it. Our marina has a very narrow channel and coming in under certain weather conditions would be dangerous with out reliable auxillary power. Thank, Steve

The Virus 7 is reliable...

...but much underpowered for a 27 foot boat. I have extensive experience with the motor having had one in my previous boat. I successfully rebuilt it (which the experts at Hansen Marine said couldn't be done) and ran it for years. However, I would not recommend buying a boat with the Vire in it simply because there are other, more common powerplants out there. The Vire is basically outboard technology employed as an inboard. Because Westerbeke imported the engine from Denmark, people often mistakenly take it for a diesel. But it is actually a 2-cycle gas engine. If you call Westerbeke for support they'll tell you "On-yer-bike" and refer you to Hansen Marine in Marblehead, MA. They don't want (or have) anything to do with it. If this is a prospective purchase, I would base my decision NOT to purchase the boat based solely on the fact that it has a Vire in it. Not because of reliability, but because of the other expenses that go along with this engine. Cheers, Bob Linkage to my sailing homepage below

Vire 7

Steve, The Vire 7 still powers my C&C 26 (1977) build. I have tuned it up with new points and carb kit but the engine seems to be very sound and winterizing is snap just drain the cooling water out and spray engine fog into the spark plug hole, it can also run with no battery power. Its only drawbacks are only 10 HP. max a little small for a 27' boat, tends to be noisy and you do get a little smoke at start up, I run mine at 50:1 gas/oil. If you want more info. the C&C owners web site has a section on the Vire 7. Also a company in Kingston On. called Crinan sells spares and recon. engines. I just sold my C&C and purchased an Oday 30 with Yanmar power this engine takes a lot more time to lay up than the Vire. Yours Rick.
