Vinyl Wrap

Hello, I own a 1990 Beneteau 35s5 sailboat. The headliner is falling off and nasty. I need logical remedy. The idea of a gloss vinyl interior wrap seems like a good idea. It would be easy to clean. My question is; after all of the material and glue is removed the surface would still not be smooth, would the vinyl stick? Has anyone tried this solution?
