I was reading the replies to the article "Fiberglass problems and Blister" and noticed Crazy Dave talking about vinyl ester resin in below water line repairs. A couple of weeks ago I was out sailing my 1994 23.5 and bounced off of something. We were in the Chehalis River at the time and I assumed it was submerged log/tree/root wad and was just happy it was not a dead head. The blow was pretty light, but when hauled the boat out I found about a two inch long nick in the gel goat below the water line. I was getting ready to fix it this weekend when I read article that mentioned the vinyl ester resin. What I was planning on doing was cleaning out the nick, roughing it up with about 80 grit sand paper and then using an epoxy putty to fill the nick. I have done this on other boats and I have found that if one uses plastic over the putty it is possible to get a nice smooth finish that does not require sanding. Of course this was always in Polyester resin gel hulls. Anyhow, my question to Crazy Dave is: 1.Does a 1994 Hunter 23.5 have a vinyl ester resin gel coat below the water line? 2.Is the repair technique described above appropriate? Thanks, Al Beattie "ElseWhere"

Al; I do not believe a vinyl ester coating was on boat as Hunter started doing this several years ago. As for repair, I would tend to agree with you. In fact, I learned something from you regarding the clear plastic over the epoxy. I will hve to try that some time. Some folks would want to cover with gel coat to match the hull color and with white, it is very difficult. Could try using a color chart that one owuld find in the automotive industry. We do learn from this forum. Crazy Dave
