What are the pros and cons of having vinyl for the bottoms of cushions? On the exterior cushions this seems like a good idea. On the interior, good if there may be a chance of leaks. What are the general feelings on this? Thanks to all.

Condensation!

Jim: I think it is a good idea. If you get condensation (or some type of leak), you may get some mildew. Very easy to clean up the vinyl, difficult to clean upolstry. Also want to make sure you only use vinyl zippers. Metal ones rust and then it is impossible to remove foam.

Some Cons

Personally, I prefer Sunbrella on both top and bottom of cushions for both inside and outside cushions. I'm afraid of vinyl getting brittle and cracking with age. A vinyl bottom would be slippery. In some cases vinyl increases chances of condensation. I throw my Sunbrella cushion covers in the washing machine - not sure if that's advisable with vinyl. Inside the boat, I glued 1/4 inch foam to the seat and bed surfaces. This acts as insulation to illiminate condensation and provides a non-slip surface fore the cushions. Good idea

My cushions have vinyl on the bottoms and back sides. You never know when you'll have a leak or someone will spill and it invariably pools under the cushions. I don't think you'd have to worry about the vinyl becoming brittle for a LOOOONG time, especially if it's not exposed to sun. LaDonna

I just had new cushions made for my Catalina 36. I finally decided "not" to go with vinyl on the bottoms (the upholster was going to charge more) and because I can flip the seat cushions over if there is a spot, etc. Just my view.

Vinyl Bottoms

My 1973 Catalina 22 has the original cushions with vinyl bottoms and backs. Even though some of the cushions top sides are badly worn , the vinyl bottoms are good as new after 28 years of use. I think that this speaks for itself. Barry Broyles Catalina 22 #1909 "Brighteyes"
