For Spring commissioning of our manual head on a Hunter 340, will flush out antifreeze with fresh water. Good idea to flush out with a cup or so of vinegar? Use it to flush out our coffee maker periodically, same idea for head or not? Thanks

head flush with vinegar

Stuart; A periodic flush of the head with white vinegar will help to desolve the mineral deposits which build up in the system. Pump just enough to let the vinegar remain in the hoses and pump for a couple hours then flush out with fresh water. When complete lubricate the pump by using some baby oil. Pump just enough to fill the pump with the oil and let sit overnight. Good luck, PAT

vinegar

while it is a good idea to flush the head with vinegar on a regular bases I would caution against the mixing of vinegar and the anti freeze unless you are sure that there would be no reaction between the two. I would suggest that you use fresh water to flush the antifreze out and empty the holdinfg tank and then use a vinegar flush. Maybe Peggy has some better imput but I'm cautious about mixing the two.

I don't think you quite understand the purpose...

of vinegar in a sanitation system. You don't use vinegar in your coffee pot to clean it, you use it to remove hard water streaks and stains. You use it for the same reason in a sanitation system. Vinegar doesn't clean, it doesn't "sweeten"...in fact, it doesn't do a thing for the holding tank...but the acidity in vinegar--white vinegar especially--dissolves urine crystals and sea water calcium carbonates that can otherwise build up in the head discharge hose, reducing the diameter and often creating clogs. That's the ONLY reason to put it down the head. So there's no point in using vinegar to rinse the anti-freeze out of your sanitation system. All you need is a lot of clean fresh water. When you start using it, put a cupful down the toilet once a week to keep the hose cleaned out.

Thanks. I now understand the purpose

and how to use vinegar in the head (as well as the coffee pot)!
