Vinegar and water

Peggy, I wrote a couple of weeks ago about having changed out the "kit" on a Jabsco last Spring. Well, I totally replaced the head this past week (as it was almost as cheap as buying just a kit). When I dismantled the old one to examine the "why" factor, I found that the rubber gasket has deteriorated in just a couple of months. We are no longer using any water from Lake Erie, as we have closed off the thru hull. Instead, we are using a bottle mixture of White Vinegar and regular water to flush (approximately 50/50 mix). Your suggestion about using White Vinegar was taken to heart a couple of years ago, and we have not had ANY odors in our boat since then. However, we are trying our best to keep it that way (as we installed all new lines, per your specs, about three years ago). My question now is this: Do you think that the mix of Wht. Vin and water is overuse of the wht. vin, and may be causing the rubber to deteriorate too quickly??? The condition of this last gasket has caused some concern with me and my fellow dock mates. We are all interested in your response.........Thanks, as always, for your input and ideas!!!

Too much of a good thing...

That could be your problem. I've never recommended using vinegar for flushing. My advice is a cupful of white vinegar down the toilet once a week when the boat will sit for days to dissolve sea water minerals--a problem you don't even have! Since you're not in salt water, I don't know why you're not flushing with lake water. At the end of the weekend, make sure to flush plenty of water down the toilet to rinse any residual waste out of the toilet discharge, and follow that with a little Raritan C.P.

I Must Agree ............................

............ that vinegar DOES appear to swell, if not disintegrate the rubber. I recently relpaced the internals in our Jabsco head and decided to soak the bubber valve plate in vinegar (to clean it) and keep it for a spare. After a few days, I noticed that the rubber had swelled to the point where the rubber plate was useless as a spare. Ever since then I have been reluctant to continue the vinegar treatment. I would suspect that the hoses are more than able to withstand the vinegar treatment but the head internals appear to be the weak link. Regards, s/v Island Hunter

Peggy, Thanks For The Response.......

I do know that the White Vinegar treatment has done wonders for the odor problem. Guess going back to using the lake water is not all that bad, just thought that using regular water w/ the vinegar was a good way to keep things cleaner (and less odorful). Too much of a good thing is, undoubtedly, the answer here, as you and Ralph both pointed out!! As always, we will heed your advice about the head.

Chuck out the Jabsco

We recently gave up in disgust with our Jabsco manual toilet and replaced it with an electric TMC. We haven't had a problem since. You're right, the Jabsco kits are almost as expensive as a new toilet, and they constantly break down and leak. Waste of time if you ask me. Gary
