Just placed a wanted ad for a Vigil RT80 VHF radio. Ours will transmit, but not receive audio. Any ideas on why?

When you turn the squelch down and volume up, do you hear noise? If yes, select some other chanel and see if you can contact any one such as a dockmate or select a weather chanel, or turn on fog signal. If no audio, consider a new VHF radio. If you can not hear noise , take the cover off and disconnect the speaker wires and make continuity check of the coil. If it is good, check the plug that allows you to add an external speaker and connect an 8 ohm external speaker.

Hi Joe. Thanks for your message. The Vigil, as original, uses an external speaker. No noise on any channel regardless of volume or squelch level. I'll try the coil continuity check. I'm hoping someone out there has a working RT80 that they want to dispose of.

I suspect the external speaker - the speaker itself, or, more likely, the connections - connectors, cables. That's where I would dig in.

What kind of plug is on the external speaker cable?

Needs checking. A few days before I can get to the boat.
Gotcha. Yea, I would chase these down before I replace the radio.

Be careful. If you short the speaker wires you can (probably will) damage the output.
If the speaker uses a 3.5mm plug you can easily plug it into something else to see if it works. Again, make sure that downstream of the plug it isn't shorted.
