Vibrating Keel?

Hey, I'm looking to buy a C22 or similar (used to sail in a fixed keel version when younger) and had a few hours around the lake in a couple... Is there any way to quiet the boat? The winch cable for the keel seems to vibrate in them...? Is this normal?

Too Tight

If you back off the keel winch handle until there is no tension on the cable at all, it is silent.

Wow, thanks for the fast reply! We did try that. I'll try it again -- maybe let it out even further this time. Cheers!

Your Welcome!

Just don't do what my 12 year old son did last night. I was at the helm and he was on his way in or out of the cabin, (I don't remember which as this was the umpteenth time in or out) and we moved from a run across a shallow shoal (keel up) to a reach. As he was stepping down I asked him to crank the keel all the way down. Next thing I knew he was standing there holding the winch handle. I don't know who had a more suprised look, him or me! I've got to replace that missing clip one of these days!

Vibrating Keel

I used to have a MacGregor 25 with a swing keel. Same problem; same solution. Just like a with a guitar, a taut string will vibrate; a slack one will not. Just keep easing the tension until the vibration stops.

Cable Hum

My owner's book says that you should lower the keel all the way down, and then take off an extra turn on the winch to allow the cable to go slack. It does sometimes work for me. On the lake where I usually sail there are numerous shallow areas, so I rarely have the keel all the way down. I've grown used to the humming sound. Its a matter of experimentation really. Thumping and banging noise can usually be cured by using the lock-down bolt. But this is a matter of some debate as well. I usually snug the bolt up, to quiet the banging, but never over tighen it. I've known of one that was bent when the keel struck an object under the water. Which, of course, means that the keel could be retracted until the bolt is removed. Why does the keel hum? Because it doesn't know the words. Have fun.

Oh that humming feeling

I too experience the humming sound but to be honest, I kind of like it along with the wind. Rumor has it from more experienced people that it's the chain that raises and lowers chain. Call me crazy, but it has a soothing sound for me. Of course, I am crazy...most sailors are anyway.
