Hiee,

I'm looking at this radio for our boat, although I actually prefer a Cobra due to power switching feature. Anyhow, how do you get the GPS data to the radio? I'll be using a laptop with OpenCPN and a GPS mouse to feed the gps data to it. Is there any way (like a splitter) to also send that data to this radio. On the other hand how about sending the data to the radio is it a pass thru configuration so that it would also be sent to the laptop??

Have you downloaded and read the owner's manual? http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,5870.0.html

It appears three wires connect it to a chartplotter or a handheld, not sure about getting to a laptop running a GPS puck with charting software. No USB seems to be in the wiring diagram.

This radio is designed to have the GPS INPUT the location TO the radio to make the DSC function work. It does not seem to be as "interactive" with your laptop as you imply in your question.

Stu that is the conclusion that we have arrived at. Perhaps I can ask the creators of OpenCPN to include a module that will output the data from the puck to another device.

Hiee,

I have been looking at linux and think that I can use gpspipe to send the gps mouse data coming in to gpsd to the usb port that the radio is connected to. I won't know if this works until I make my final selection of radio and have it on hand. I'm working on the basis that these radio's use usb as the connection to the gps data source.

The eclipse does not use USB. We have the DSC +, about $120 from Defender, and have it hooked....

......to the Eagle Cuda 350 in the picture above. It has a NEMA output that you need to buy an extra cable for $20 and the cable has the 2 wires you need to hook to the 2 input wires on the VHF. It works great and was easy to hook up. I had to add some wiring to get from the Cuda's wire that isn't that long to ....

.... the wires on the Standard Horizon over the sink.

The Eclipse comes in two different DSC models. The cheaper one has only one radio in the enclosure and scans channel 70 for DSC calls. The DSC+ model has two radios in the enclosure and one is devoted to channel 70. Like I said we have the +, but now wonder if we really needed that model.

The VHF will output DSC info from reading the manual (go on Standard Horizon and download it), but I don't think in a format that will work with either OpenCPN or SeaClear II.

I use SeaClear and see where it implies that it will pass through NEMA, but I haven't tried it and don't know what is required. We run the SeaClear on....

...the ship's computer that is hooked to a GPS puck and to a handheld Garmin Map 76 and send waypoints to the 76. If you had something like the 76 you could send from it also to the VHF.

Good luck and we like all of the above that we are using and there is more on our site here......
